Question 1

Layers and Glazes

Accepted Answer

Layers and Glazes Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Painting doesn't end with the first stroke; it's built in the air between layers of color and fire, achieving a three-dimensionality that seems to breathe beneath the glaze. In this way, we begin to build the skill of the art of depth in porcelain. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link Transparency as a Working Philosophy Mastering glazes is reaching maturity in porcelain painting. While opaque paint seeks to cover, glazing seeks to reveal. It's a transparency technique where we apply layers of color so thin that light can pass through them, bounce off the white of the plate, and return to the viewer's eye laden with nuances. In the Atelier, this is the fundamental tool for achieving extreme realism: we don't paint a shadow, we "build" it, firing after firing. It's a process of patience and rigor that transforms a flat surface into a window with infinite depth. In designer porcelain, the white of the support is our most powerful light. The glazing technique consists of not smothering the light with thick layers of pigment. By using vehicles and oils with a smooth flow, we achieve a color that is almost a colored shadow. This transparency allows the viewer, when observing a face or a flower, to feel that there is "something more" beneath the surface, a vital vibration that can only be achieved by respecting the nobility of the base material and the purity of the mineral pigments. Optical Mixing: The Color Created in the Eye. One of the wonders of glazing is "optical mixing." Instead of mixing all the colors on the palette, we apply a pure color, fire it in the third firing, and then apply another transparent color on top. The human eye blends both tones, creating a chromatic richness impossible to achieve with a single physical mixture. This is how those vibrant purples or deep greens that define Marina Fiamingo's botanical realism are born, where nature seems to overflow the plate. Volume and Atmospheric Perspective: Layering allows us to masterfully control perspective. The first glazes are usually for backgrounds and distant atmospheres, using cool tones that visually recede. As we add layers and burns, we move closer to the foreground with warmer, more defined details using the nib and gold. This technical layering creates the sensation that the painted object has real volume, allowing shadows to have "air" and highlights to have a brilliance that seems to emanate from within the porcelain. Patience in Realistic Portraiture: If there is one area where glazes reign supreme, it is in portrait painting. Human skin is a complex system of layers, and to imitate it, we must work in the same way. A first glaze for the base tone, a second for the pinkish nuances and subtle veins, and a third to unify and soften. Each pass through the fire consolidates the previous layer, allowing us to work on top without fear of "dirtying" the color. This resilience in the process is what gives the work that depth that so moves us when we open the kiln. The Mastery of Knowing When to Stop The greatest challenge of this technique is knowing when the piece has reached its full potential. One too many layers can dull the transparency achieved, and one too few can leave the piece without the necessary strength. In the workshop, we foster the discipline of observation to evaluate each firing with a critical eye. The final glaze is often a caress of color that harmonizes the entire piece, the master touch that unites the technical with the spiritual. I invite you to discover this path of slow construction, where each layer is another step towards the artistic excellence that only handcrafted porcelain can offer. FAQs about Layers and Glazes Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: What exactly is a glaze in porcelain painting? A glaze is an extremely thin, transparent layer of paint applied over a surface that has already been painted and fired (vitrified). Its function is not to cover what lies beneath, but to modify its tone or saturation, creating a visual depth that mimics the way light passes through real objects like flower petals or human skin. It's the key to going from a flat painting to a work with realistic volume. Can a glaze be applied without burning the previous layer? It's not recommended if you're aiming for maximum realism, since applying a new layer of oil over fresh paint would physically mix the colors on the plate, losing transparency and sharpness. The essence of glazing lies in allowing light to pass through a solid, vitrified layer to reach the next. Burning between layers ensures that each hue stays in place, allowing for a depth that no direct mixing can match. How do I prevent the glaze from having smudges or brushstrokes? The key lies in the choice of mop brush and the fluidity of the oil paint. Once the glaze has been applied with a flat brush, a very soft-bristled brush should be used to blend the paint while it is still wet, removing any trace of the brush. Using slow-drying oils gives us the necessary time to work the surface until it is perfectly smooth and transparent before firing. Can glazes be used to correct a color that is too intense? Absolutely! Glazes are excellent tools for tonal correction. If an area is too warm or vibrant, a very thin glaze of a complementary or cool color can tone down or harmonize that area without having to erase the previous work. This fine-tuning technique allows the artist to have complete control over the atmosphere of the work until the final firing, ensuring a balanced and professional final result. Question 2

Pen and Gold

Accepted Answer

Nib and Gold Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title The precision of the stroke meets the nobility of the metal; discover how the use of the nib and liquid gold transforms an artist's piece into a collector's item, from the filigree of the porcelain detail Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Nib: The Invisible Architect In the world of the third firing, it is the detail that tells the true story of the work. While large patches of color define volume, it is the fine lines that provide identity and character. The use of the nib, inherited from classical calligraphy, allows us to achieve a definition that the finest brush could only dream of. When we add to this tool the application of precious metals such as gold, we enter a dimension of technical luxury where each point and each filament becomes a flash of vitrified light, elevating the porcelain to an unparalleled level of exclusivity. The nib (or mapping pen) is the precision tool par excellence in the Atelier. Unlike a brush, its metal tip allows us to control the flow of pigment with absolute precision. It is indispensable for rendering the most demanding anatomical details in portraiture, such as eyelashes, eyebrows, or fine lines of expression. By loading the nib with a mixture of pigment and low-viscosity oils, we achieve a stroke that seems like a whisper, but which, after firing, remains firm and crisp forever. Liquid Gold: The Alchemy of Eternal Brilliance. Painting with gold is an exercise in faith and technical knowledge. The liquid gold we use is a suspension of real metal that, before entering the kiln, looks like a dark, opaque varnish. It is in the third firing where the magic happens: the oils disappear, and the 18- or 24-karat gold emerges with its characteristic splendor. Applying gold with a nib allows us to create filigree, borders, and jewelry details that appear woven onto the enamel, giving the piece a distinction that only precious materials can offer. The Technique of Gold Filleting and Freehand Painting: Gold filleting—that perfect golden line that borders a plate or frames a portrait—requires a surgeon's steady hand and a disciplined approach to observation. In our workshop, we encourage the freehand use of the nib so that the design is not a mechanical repetition, but rather an extension of the artwork's rhythm. The key lies in the preparation of the gold ink; it must have the exact fluidity so that the nib doesn't clog or drip, allowing the hand to glide with the confidence that only years of practice and quality materials can provide. Synchronicity Between Metal and Color: A common mistake is to see gold as an isolated element. In Marina Fiamingo's works, gold interacts with mineral pigments to highlight light or create dramatic contrasts. We can use the nib to "draw" with gold over already painted areas, creating patterns of light that capture the viewer's eye from different angles. This technical synchronization requires understanding drying times and firing temperatures, as precious metals are often the "final touch" of the work, the crowning jewel that completes the creative cycle. Conservation of the Vitrified Jewel: A piece that combines the detail of the nib with the richness of gold is a work that defies time. Vitrification ensures that these microscopic lines do not fade, but like any jewel, it requires careful maintenance. Avoiding abrasives and treating the piece with the delicacy that its creation process demands is essential for its brilliance to remain intact for generations. I invite you to master these precision tools; you will see how your attention to detail expands, allowing you to create works with a level of sophistication that only the union of metal and porcelain can achieve. FAQs about Nibs and Gold: Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: What type of oil is best for loading the nib with pigment? To ensure the nib flows smoothly, we recommend very light, slow-drying oils, such as lavender oil or specific nib mediums. The mixture should be thinner than brushwork, similar to the consistency of India ink, so the metal nib can "write" on the porcelain glaze continuously without scratching the surface. Why does gold sometimes appear dull or "burnt" after firing? The dullness of gold is usually due to two factors: a layer that is too thin and evaporates in the heat, or an excessively high firing temperature that alters the metal's properties. In the workshop, we teach that gold requires a specific firing temperature, generally lower than that of background colors (around 720°C to 780°C), to ensure that the characteristic mirror-like luster of designer porcelain remains flawless and luxurious. Can the nib be used on paint that has not yet been fired? We don't recommend this, as the metal nib tip would lift the wet or fresh paint from the background. The correct technique is to first fire the base colors in their third firing and then, on the already vitrified and cooled surface, apply the nib or gold details. This ensures a crisp line, no unwanted color mixing, and that each layer of detail retains its absolute definition. How do you clean the nib so it doesn't get ruined by the gold? The nib should be cleaned immediately after use with alcohol or a specific thinner for resinous oils, making sure no dried gold residue remains in the nib groove. A nib tip clogged with dried metal will lose its flexibility and precision. Storing pens dry and protected from moisture is an essential maintenance habit that ensures your precision tool is always ready for the next stroke of gold. For uninterrupted nib flow, we recommend very light, slow-drying oils, such as lavender oil, or certain nib-specific mediums. The mixture should be thinner than that used for brush painting, similar to the consistency of India ink, so that the metal nib can "write" on the porcelain glaze continuously without scratching the surface. Question 3

The Third Cooking

Accepted Answer

The Third Firing Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title There is a fire that can immortalize art, and from vitrification we arrive at the moment of truth; the instant when the pigment and the glaze fuse forever in an embrace of warmth and unalterable brilliance. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Alchemy of Vitrification Understanding the technique of the third firing is like entering the secret laboratory of porcelain. Unlike traditional painting on canvas, where the final result is seen as soon as the brush is lifted, in our art the process culminates inside the kiln. Painting on a pre-glazed surface allows us exceptional creative freedom, but demands absolute respect for the laws of thermodynamics. It is here that the chemistry of mineral pigments meets the rigor of fire, transforming opaque powders into vibrant and eternal colors that will withstand the passage of centuries without losing an iota of their original light. The vitrification process is not simply "drying" the paint; it is a molecular fusion. Reaching temperatures of around 780°C to 820°C, the glaze of the piece softens enough to allow the metallic oxides of our pigments to integrate into its structure. This is why a work by Marina Fiamingo doesn't have a layer of paint "on top" of the porcelain, but rather it is part of the porcelain itself. This chemical integration is what gives it that unique visual depth and guarantees that the design will never fade or be altered by use or time. Temperature Curves: The Rhythm of Heat. The kiln is not an on/off switch; it is an instrument that requires precise control. The "temperature curve" is the map that guides the heat: a slow rise to allow the oils and vehicles to evaporate without creating bubbles, and an even slower cooling to avoid thermal shock. This stage demands the patience that we so strongly promote in the workshop; Rushing the cooling process can lead to the loss of a piece due to internal stresses, reminding us that the art of patience is also a technical necessity. The Challenge of Successive Firings Achieving mastery of realism almost never happens in a single firing. The third firing is, in reality, a cycle of multiple entries into the kiln. Each firing allows us to add a new layer of depth, adjust a skin tone, or intensify the gaze of a portrait. It is a cumulative process where each passage through the fire consolidates the previous one and prepares us for the next level of detail. This layering technique is what allows light to penetrate the different depths of the pigment, creating a three-dimensional effect that no other form of painting can replicate. The Chromatic Transformation of Fire One of the most fascinating aspects of this technique is that the colors we apply are not always the ones that come out of the kiln. The oxides react to the heat, changing their appearance: a pink may look brownish when painted, and liquid gold resembles a dark brown varnish. Developing the ability to foresee the final result is an essential part of the training at the Atelier. We must "see" the future of the piece while we paint, trusting in our technical knowledge so that, when we open the kiln door, reality matches the artistic vision we created in cold form. The Perpetuity of the Finished Work: After the final firing, the piece ceases to be fragile and becomes eternal. The third firing gives the porcelain exceptional resistance to external agents, sunlight, and humidity. A vitrified piece is, technically, one of the most durable art forms in existence. I invite you to value each step through the fire not as a risk, but as a consecration. In the workshop, you will learn to master this untamable element, making the kiln your most faithful ally so that your message and your talent are forever etched in the nobility of the porcelain. FAQs about the Third Firing: Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: Why is it called a "third firing" if the piece goes into the kiln several times? It's called that because of the historical hierarchy of the ceramic process: the first is bisque firing (shaping the clay body), the second is glazing (the white vitreous base), and the third is decorating over that glaze. Even if we fire a complex portrait five or six times, they all belong to the "third firing" stage because they occur on the already vitrified surface, melting the new pigments with each firing. Can a piece be ruined by excessive firing? If the base is high quality, the porcelain can withstand numerous firings without problems. However, there is a technical limit: if it's fired too many times at very high temperatures, some colors can begin to fade or lose intensity, and the base glaze can suffer fatigue. That's why, in the workshop, we plan each firing with a clear objective, ensuring that each firing adds value and doesn't jeopardize the integrity of the piece. What happens if the kiln is opened before it's cooled? Opening the kiln prematurely is the most serious mistake you can make, as it causes immediate thermal shock. The cold air from outside hits the hot porcelain, causing stresses that result in fractures or cracks in the piece (the famous "crack"). Discipline in the third firing involves respecting the natural cooling cycle, which usually lasts as many hours as the heating itself, ensuring that the vitrification sets securely and permanently. Is it necessary to use a special kiln for this technique? Yes, a muffle kiln designed to reach and maintain precise temperatures of up to 900°C with rigorous control of the heat curve is required. These kilns allow for uniform temperature distribution throughout the chamber, something a domestic oven cannot achieve. The use of appropriate technology is what allows us to guarantee that the precious metals and pigments reach their optimal brilliance and adhesion without any technical surprises. Question 4

Freehand Painting

Accepted Answer

Freehand Painting Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title If you're looking to blend freedom with precision, it's good practice to forgo tracings and rigid guides to open up the channels between the artist and the surface. Discover the power of trusting your eye and your steady hand to create works with soul and direct movement on porcelain. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Leap of Faith: Trusting Your Own Vision Freehand painting is perhaps the most honest and courageous act within the studio. It means shedding the crutches of tracing and mechanical transfer to allow the artist's vision to flow unfiltered onto the porcelain. This technique is not just a way of working; it's a philosophy that prioritizes the freshness of the brushstroke and the personal interpretation of reality. When painting freehand, each work becomes a unique record of a moment of pure connection, where the discipline of observation manifests in every movement of the brush. Freehand painting requires courage, but above all, confidence. When we face the blank canvas without pre-established guidelines, we allow our artistic intuition to take the lead. This spontaneity is what gives Marina Fiamingo's pieces that "living work" character. By dispensing with rigid lines, the brushstroke acquires a rhythm and vibrancy that tracing often stifles, allowing the viewer to perceive the creator's energy in every detail of the composition. Training the Eye Before the Hand. Freehand painting is not synonymous with careless improvisation; it is the result of a trained eye. Before touching the porcelain, we conduct a thorough visual study of the model, whether it is a portrait or a botanical motif. We must understand the proportions and lines of force in our minds first. This preparation gives us the confidence so that, when the brush touches the glaze, the stroke is decisive, precise, and full of the personality that only the human gesture can provide. The Connection with the Shape of the Piece. When we paint freehand, the artwork has the ability to adapt organically to the shape of the object. Unlike a rigid design that must fit precisely, freehand painting allows the brush to "dance" with the curves of a jug or the edges of a bowl. As we saw when discussing the perfect support, this flexibility is what transforms the object and the painting into an indivisible whole, where the design seems to have emerged from the porcelain itself. The Technical Advantage of Live Correction One of the great benefits of working with slow-drying oils freehand is the ability to adjust the design in real time. If a stroke lacks the desired elegance, we can remove it or modify its direction without leaving a trace. This freedom eliminates the fear of making mistakes and invites us to experiment with the intensity of the line. The process becomes a constant dialogue between the artist and the paint, where each "mistake" is actually an instruction for achieving technical mastery. The Value of the Artist's Authenticity In a world full of mass-produced reproductions, freehand painting is a symbol of authenticity. Collectors value the controlled imperfection and unique character that only the human hand can bestow. I invite you to put aside templates and discover your own voice on porcelain. In the workshop, I will teach you visual reference methods so that your freehand painting has the precision of a master and the freedom of a creator who isn't afraid of the blank canvas. FAQs about Freehand Painting: Find answers here to the most common questions I receive about this topic. Ask me directly: Do I need to be an expert at drawing to paint freehand? You don't need to be an accomplished artist, but you do need a willingness to learn to observe proportions and negative space. It's a skill that develops with constant practice. How are basic references marked on porcelain? We often use special grease pencils that disappear in the kiln to mark minimal reference points that help us position the composition without restricting the freedom of the stroke. Is it possible to achieve extreme realism freehand? Absolutely! In fact, the most lifelike portraits are those where the artist adjusts their brushstrokes according to what their eye perceives in the moment, achieving a naturalness that mechanical methods cannot replicate. What brushes are best for this technique? I recommend brushes with good spring and impeccable tips. Natural hair brushes are ideal because they respond immediately to the artist's hand, facilitating the fluidity of the design. Question 5

Realism with Texture and Volume

Accepted Answer

Realism with Texture and Volume Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title I discovered the master technique I frequently use to give my works a tactile three-dimensionality that transcends flat painting and challenges the limits of porcelain. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Secret of Pigment Density Entering the world of oil on mole is understanding that paint doesn't have to be a two-dimensional layer. This technique, which is the hallmark of our Atelier, allows us to play with the density of mineral pigments to "sculpt" light. Unlike traditional glazes, here the paint has body, weight, and a tactile intention that can be felt even before firing. It is the definitive technique for those who want porcelain to cease being a cold object and instead have the vibrancy of an organic and living work. The foundation of oil on mole lies in the preparation of the paste. We're not aiming for a watercolor-like paint, but rather a mixture with just the right viscosity to allow the brush to leave a raised, textured mark. This density is achieved by carefully balancing powdered pigment with high-quality resinous oils. By mastering this mixture, the artist gains the ability to create planes of light that physically protrude from the piece, granting a depth that the eye perceives as striking three-dimensional realism. Creating Textures You Can Feel: What makes oil on mole unique is its ability to represent complex textures with astonishing fidelity. From the roughness of tree bark to the velvety softness of a withered rose, this technique allows us to imitate nature in an almost sculptural way. In our botanical realism pieces, oil on mole is what provides that unique character, allowing each petal or vein to have its own physical presence beneath the vitrified glaze. The Handling of Light and Deep Shadow: Thanks to the material's thickness, this technique allows for achieving much deeper shadow values than any other. We can work "wet on wet," blending colors with exceptional chromatic richness without losing the structure of the brushstroke. This depth is vital for achieving mastery in portraiture, where the volumes of the face need the solidity that only a full-bodied paint can provide, allowing light to reflect off the created reliefs. Firing Behavior: One of the technical wonders of oil on mole is how it transforms during vitrification. With a higher pigment load, the final luster is sumptuous and profound. However, it requires precise knowledge of the firing temperature to ensure that the relief does not flatten from excessive heat or bubble from lack of ventilation. In the workshop, we teach how to balance this load so that the piece maintains its elegance and durability, guaranteeing that the relief is an integral part of the porcelain. An Invitation to Tactical Mastery: I invite you to step outside the comfort zone of flat painting. Oil on mole opens a world of expressive possibilities where your hand not only paints, but also builds. It's a technique that requires brushes with good rebound and a mind open to observing the world in three dimensions. Come and discover the pleasure of seeing your work come to life and take on relief in each session, transforming a simple plate into a timeless, original sculpture. Frequently Asked Questions about Textures and Volume: Find answers here to the most common questions I receive about this topic. Ask me directly: Is oil painting on porcelain more difficult than conventional painting? It requires a steeper learning curve because you have to learn to manage the viscosity of the material, but once you master brush loading, it offers a creative freedom that flat painting can't match. What oils are used for this technique? We use oils with more body and resin, often called closed or thick oils, which allow the pigment to maintain its shape without spreading on the porcelain. Can it be combined with other techniques in the same piece? Absolutely! We often use soft glazes for backgrounds and reserve thick oil paint for the main subject, creating a contrast of textures that enhances the realism of the work. How many firings does a piece require with this technique? Depending on the complexity of the relief, it can require between two and four firings. The first establishes the basic volume, and subsequent firings refine the details and depth of color. Question 6

From Pixel to Board:

Accepted Answer

From Pixel to Plate Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title How to Choose the Perfect Photo for Your Portrait? The quality of your final work begins long before you touch the brush; it starts the moment you choose the image that will serve as a map for your talent. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Tyranny of Detail: Resolution and Focus In the digital age, our muse often resides on a phone screen, but not every photograph is suitable for being immortalized on porcelain. To achieve impactful realism, we need a reference that speaks to us clearly. Painting a portrait is a process of visual translation, and if the original message (the photo) is "blurry" or lacks nuance, the final translation will lose its soul. At the Atelier, we dedicate sacred time to image selection, understanding that a good photograph is the key to successful mastery of realism. To paint every pore, every eyebrow hair, or the subtle glimmer of a tear, we need to see them in the reference. A low-resolution, pixelated, or out-of-focus photo forces us to improvise, and in realism, unfounded improvisation often strays from the subject's true identity. When choosing your photo, zoom in on the eyes: if you can clearly see the details of the iris and eyelashes, you have a technical goldmine. This clarity will allow you to use your precision brushes with the confidence of someone who knows exactly where the stroke is going. Light: The Great Sculptor of the Face. The most common mistake is choosing photos with a front flash or very flat lighting that "erases" the features. For a portrait to have volume and not look like a sticker on porcelain, we need shadows. We look for photos with side or overhead lighting that define the bridge of the nose, the depth of the eye sockets, and the jawline. These shadows allow us to play with skin tones and transparencies, creating a three-dimensionality that makes the viewer want to reach out and touch the piece. Composition and the Angle of the Gaze: A good portrait tells a story through its framing. Sometimes, a tight close-up that focuses solely on the eyes is much more powerful than a full-body shot. We must observe the direction of the head and shoulders; slightly tilted angles tend to be more dynamic and natural than rigid frontal shots. By applying anatomy and proportion, a photo with an interesting angle gives us the opportunity to demonstrate our technical skill, transforming the porcelain plate into a window into the subject's personality. The Emotional Connection with the Model: Beyond megapixels, the photo must resonate. If we are painting a tribute to a loved one, the captured expression must be the essence of that person. We seek authentic gestures, sincere gazes, and genuine smiles. This emotional connection is the driving force that sustains us through long hours of work and multiple exposures. When an artist is enamored with the reference, patience flows and the brush seems to move on its own, guided by the desire to do justice to the beauty of that memory. Preparing the Reference: Paper vs. Screen In the modern studio, we often work with tablets that allow us to instantly enlarge details, but having a high-quality print on hand is also vital for comparing colors. Preparing the image—perhaps adjusting the contrast slightly or converting the photo to black and white to better understand the light values—is part of the discipline of observation. In the end, the photo is the map, but you are the guide. With a good reference and the right technique, the transition from digital pixel to vitrified plate will be a journey of pure enjoyment and artistic excellence. Frequently Asked Questions about From Pixel to Plate Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: Can you paint a portrait from an old or damaged photograph? Yes, it is possible, but it requires a higher level of skill since the artist will have to "fill in" the missing information based on their knowledge of anatomy. In these cases, we usually recommend working in sepia tones or monochromatic palettes to disguise the lack of detail and focus on the atmosphere and overall likeness, turning the limitations of the original photo into a vintage aesthetic choice. Is it better to use a color photo or a black and white one as a guide? For beginners, a black and white photo is ideal for understanding light and shadow values (volume) without the distraction of color. Once the structure is mastered, switching to a color reference allows you to work on the complexity of skin tones. At the Atelier, we often use both: the black and white to ensure a likeness and the color for the final chromatic richness. How important is the background of the original photograph? In most portraits, the background of the original photo is discarded or simplified so that it doesn't compete with the face. However, the colors of the original background can influence the skin's reflections (ambient light). It's important to decide before starting whether we're going to use a neutral background, a soft gradient, or incorporate botanical realism elements to frame the portrait. Are photos taken with a cell phone suitable for a realistic portrait? Yes, modern cell phones have excellent cameras, as long as the photos are taken in good natural light (near a window, for example) and without filters that smooth the skin. Social media beauty filters often eliminate the shadows and textures we need for realistic painting, so we always ask for the most "raw" and natural photo possible to capture the person's true essence. Yes, it's possible, but it requires a higher level of skill since the artist will have to "fill in" the missing information based on their knowledge of anatomy. In these cases, we usually recommend working in sepia tones or monochromatic settings to disguise the lack of detail and focus on the atmosphere and overall likeness, turning the limitations of the photo into a vintage aesthetic choice. Question 7

The Portrait as a Tribute

Accepted Answer

Portraiture as a Tribute Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title The adventure of painting someone we love, beyond technique and pigment, almost without us realizing it, creates a sacred space where the brush becomes a bridge to embrace, remember, and celebrate the lives of those who have shaped our history. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Intimacy of Loving Observation Painting a loved one on porcelain is an act of love that transcends mere visual representation. When we decide to portray a father, a son, or a grandfather, we are not simply seeking physical resemblance; we are trying to capture the light of their presence. At the Atelier, we understand that this type of work carries a unique emotional weight, where each stroke is a conversation with memory. It is here that the mastery of realism is placed at the service of feeling, allowing us to create an object that not only decorates but also safeguards a piece of our soul. When we paint someone we love, our discipline of observation is transformed. We no longer just see anatomy; we see stories. That tiny wrinkle when smiling or the specific tilt of the head become sacred features we want to protect. When working with skin tones, we seek the exact warmth we remember from their hands or their embrace. This deep connection with the model is what motivates us not to settle for the superficial, pushing us to seek technical excellence to do justice to the person portrayed. The Gaze as a Point of Reunion In a tribute portrait, the gaze is the moment of truth. Getting those eyes to recognize us from the porcelain plate is a process that can be profoundly healing. By painting the iris and the sparkle of someone we miss or admire, we are, in a way, bringing their essence back to the present. In our sessions, the studio often falls silent when a student manages to "find" the gaze of their loved one; it is a magical moment of reunion that only art, with its ability to stop time, can facilitate. The Ritual of Creation and Mourning As we explored in our post on art as an act of healing, painting a tribute can be a powerful tool for transmuting pain into beauty. The slow process of porcelain—the multiple firings, the waiting for the kiln, the care of the materials—functions as a ritual of accompaniment. Each layer of paint is a step toward acceptance and gratitude. The portrait ceases to be a technical task and becomes a vessel of resilience, where the kiln's fire vitrifies not only the pigments, but also our love and respect. Porcelain as a Family Heirloom Unlike a piece of paper that yellows or a digital photo that can be lost, a porcelain portrait is a promise of permanence. We are creating a family heirloom that will be passed down, telling the story of who we were and who we loved. By using precious metals like gold to frame the face of a loved one, we are elevating that memory to the status of a treasure. It's an investment in the collective memory of our lineage, ensuring that the light of that person continues to shine with the same intensity through the centuries. Your Story Written in Fire. I invite you to choose that photograph that holds a special meaning and dare to transform it into an eternal tribute. It doesn't matter if you feel you still lack technique; in the workshop, I will guide you with the sensitivity that this type of work deserves. Painting the people we love gives us back the ability to see beauty in the everyday and strength in what endures. Come and discover the transformative power of honoring your story, stroke by stroke, until the soul of the one you love shines with the nobility of handcrafted porcelain. FAQs about Portraits as Tributes. Find here the answers to the most common questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: Is it more difficult to paint someone you know than a stranger? Yes, emotionally it's more demanding because our brain knows every detail of the face, and we are more critical of the result. However, this same rigor is what leads us to pay closer attention to the nuances of expression and gaze, often resulting in works with a realism and emotion that a portrait of an unknown model could hardly achieve. What happens if I get emotional and can't continue painting? At the Atelier, we respect each student's emotional pace; the art of waiting also applies to the heart. If a tribute portrait session becomes too intense, we allow the piece to rest. Painting on porcelain with slow-drying oils gives us the flexibility to resume work when we feel ready, understanding that the healing process is as important as the completion of the piece. How do I choose the best support for a portrait I want to inherit? For a work of this sentimental value, we recommend a high-quality porcelain plaque, preferably flat and very white. As we saw in the post about the perfect support, the purity of the material guarantees that the colors remain vibrant and that the piece withstands the multiple firings necessary to achieve the extreme realism that a tribute requires. Can a dedication be included on the back of the piece? Absolutely! It is a very common and beautiful practice to write a message, a date, or the person's name with a nib and pigment on the reverse. This inscription is fired along with the artwork, becoming vitrified forever. It is the final touch that transforms the object into an unalterable historical and sentimental document, closing the circle of the tribute with a personalized signature. Question 8

Anatomy and Proportion

Accepted Answer

Anatomy and Proportion Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title If we address the foundation of human realism, we must know that you can't build a palace on sand; realism in porcelain begins with an impeccable structure that supports the beauty of each feature. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Canon of Beauty Applied to Porcelain In portraiture, drawing is the law and proportion is its language. Before even thinking about skin tones or the sparkle in the eyes, we must ensure that each feature is where nature dictated. An eye a millimeter higher or a slightly askew nose breaks the illusion of realism and, worse, the subject's identity. At the Atelier, we understand that anatomy is not a limitation, but the foundation that allows us to be free with the brush, guaranteeing that our work has the necessary solidity to be called a masterpiece. To paint a face, we must first learn to measure it. There are rules of proportion—such as dividing the face into thirds or the distance between the inner and outer corners of the eyes—that are universal. However, in freehand painting, the challenge lies in adapting these principles to the curved or flat surface of the porcelain plaque. This "fitting" stage is where patience becomes technique: we are not seeking cold, mathematical perfection, but rather an organic structure that respects real anatomy and serves as a map for the layers of color that will follow. The Symmetry and Character of the Face Although we strive for harmony, pure realism thrives on the subtle asymmetries that make us unique. No one has two sides of their face exactly alike. The key to mastery in portraiture lies in observing these subtle differences: a higher eyebrow, a deeper lip commissure, or a shadow that defines the cheekbone differently. Capturing these anatomical variations is what allows the viewer to recognize not just a "face," but a specific person with their story and character imprinted on the porcelain. The Challenge of Angle and Perspective: A frontal portrait is challenging, but a profile or foreshortening requires absolute mastery of perspective. When painting on porcelain, we must be aware of how the shape of the piece (a bowl, a jug, or a flat plate) can visually distort the anatomy. Training the eye to compensate for these distortions is part of the discipline of daily observation. The bone structure must be felt beneath the paint; we must "feel" the skull and jaw so that the volumes of light and shadow are coherent and do not appear as floating smudges. From Sketch to Final Stroke: The process of transferring the anatomy to the porcelain must be clean and precise. We often use special grease pencils that disappear in the kiln to mark the reference points. This guide gives us the confidence to apply the first pigments decisively. When working with oil on porcelain, the anatomical structure becomes our anchor: if the base is solid, we can play with the density of the material to create reliefs in the cheekbones or the nasal septum, elevating realism to an almost tactile dimension that will be forever vitrified. The Final Harmony: Soul over Structure. At the end of the process, when the anatomy is correct, the technique becomes invisible, and what emerges is emotion. A well-structured portrait is one where the measurements are not visible, but rather the expression. It is the result of uniting the rigor of drawing with the sensitivity of the artist. I invite you to embrace the study of forms and proportions as a path to freedom; once you master the foundations, there will be no face or gaze that your brush cannot capture with the fidelity and elegance that only artisan porcelain allows. FAQs about Anatomy and Proportion. Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: What do I do if I notice a proportion error after the first firing? If the error is minor, it can be corrected by strategically using light and shadow in subsequent layers to "trick" the eye. However, if the error is structural (like a misplaced eye), porcelain painting offers the possibility of carefully removing the area before the next firing or using covering techniques, although ideally, the necessary time should be dedicated to the initial sketch to avoid complex rework. Is it necessary to be a perfect artist to paint porcelain portraits? You don't need to be an accomplished draftsman, but it is vital to develop observational skills and understand the basic rules of proportion. In Marina Fiamingo's workshop, we provide tools and transfer methods that help students position features correctly, allowing them to focus on color and volume techniques without the frustration of a failed drawing. What is the most difficult feature to position anatomically? Generally, the nose and ears present the greatest challenge due to their volumetric complexity and their placement in relation to other features. The nose acts as the central axis of the face; if its angle or size is incorrect, it throws the entire portrait off balance. Therefore, we pay special attention to its placement, ensuring that its base and bridge respect the perspective of the face. How does anatomy influence the application of shadows? Anatomy dictates where the deepest shadows should fall (areas of depression such as the eye sockets or under the jaw) and where the highlights should be (areas of bone such as the forehead or cheekbone). Understanding the bone structure allows the artist to place the pigment with technical intent, creating the necessary volume for the portrait to transform from a flat image into a three-dimensional representation that appears to leap off the plate. If the error is minor, it can be corrected through the strategic use of light and shadow in subsequent layers to "trick" the eye. Question 9

Skin Tones

Accepted Answer

Skin Tones Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title There is a challenge between softness and light. Painting skin is not about choosing a color from a catalog; it's about learning to see the mosaic of light, shadows, and transparencies that makes us human. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Chromatic Mosaic: Beyond "Skin Color" In portrait painting on porcelain, skin is the element that demands the greatest sensitivity from the artist. Achieving that appearance of softness, where the light seems to filter through the surface, is the ultimate challenge of realism. Unlike other techniques, at the Atelier we take advantage of the intrinsic whiteness of the plate to act as our purest light. We don't seek to "cover up" the support, but rather to work with it, using high-purity mineral pigments to create glazes so fine that they mimic the delicacy of real skin. The first step to mastering this challenge is to banish the idea that there is only one "skin color." The human face is a map of tones: purples in the under-eye circles, subtle greens at the temples, pinks on the cheeks, and warm yellows on the forehead. In our freehand painting classes, we teach how to construct skin as a mosaic of nuances. By applying the oil-on-the-wall technique, we allow these colors to blend organically, creating a visual richness that flat color could never achieve, endowing the portrait with a unique, vibrant energy. Light as the Architect of Volume: Skin is not flat because the face is not. Every bone and muscle beneath the surface casts a shadow or reflects light. To represent this three-dimensionality, we must understand how light "travels" across the face. We use specific oils and vehicles that allow us to work the shadows gradually, avoiding harsh lines that would harden the expression. Softness in realism is not a lack of definition; it is a perfect transition between full light and shadow, making the portrait appear to have real volume beneath the glaze. Glazes and Transparencies: The Secret of Realism. Human skin has layers, and our painting must too. The glazing technique consists of applying extremely thin, transparent layers of paint, firing the piece between each layer. This process, which requires the patience we so highly value, allows light to pass through the pigments and reflect off the porcelain, creating that "inner glow" effect so characteristic of Marina Fiamingo's portraits. It is a slow construction where each firing adds a new depth of realism and softness to the work. The Technical Difference Between Childhood and Adulthood. You don't paint a child's skin the same way you paint an older adult's. In children's portraits, the key is economy of strokes and maximum smoothness in the transitions so as not to "age" the face. In contrast, in adulthood, we allow ourselves to explore textures, pores, and wrinkles that tell a story. In both cases, the discipline of observation guides us to know when to soften with a mop brush and when to define with a fine point, always respecting the subject's identity. The Kiln: The Trial by Fire for Pinks Pink and carmine tones are the most sensitive to the kiln's heat. A poorly regulated temperature can cause them to disappear or change drastically. Therefore, technical mastery involves knowing the exact firing point so that the skin maintains its freshness after vitrification. At the end of the process, the porcelain portrait is not just an image; it is a capture of life that, thanks to the quality of the materials and the technical rigor, will remain fresh and vibrant for centuries, defying time with the elegance of eternal art. FAQs about Skin Tones Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: Why do skin shadows sometimes look gray or dirty? Shadows look muddy when black is used to darken them or when brushes aren't properly cleaned between colors. For realistic, "clean" shadows, we recommend using mixtures of complementary colors (like a subtle blue over a soft orange) or earth tones with a hint of purple, creating a deep yet transparent shadow that maintains the portrait's vibrancy. How do you achieve a skin without brushstrokes? To eliminate brushstrokes, we use very soft mop brushes to blend the paint while it's wet. Using slow-drying oils (open oil) gives us the time to work the transitions until any trace of the tool disappears, resulting in a smooth, seamless surface that mimics the natural texture of human skin. How important is porcelain white in skin? Porcelain white is our brightest highlight and should be reserved for the points of greatest reflection on the face. Instead of applying thick white paint (which can look opaque), we allow the porcelain to "breathe" through very thin layers of pigment. This transparency technique is what gives Marina Fiamingo's portraits that inner luminosity that seems to emanate from the piece itself. How many layers of skin tone are necessary for good realism? Generally, between two and four layers are needed, each with its corresponding burn, to achieve realistic depth. The first layer establishes the basic shapes and shadows; the second adds chromatic nuances (pinks, subtle veins, deep shadows); and the final layers are used to harmonize the whole with soft glazes that unify the tones and give the final finish of softness and light. Question 10

The Soul in a Porcelain Portrait

Accepted Answer

The Soul in a Porcelain Portrait Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Can we capture the soul through a look? Discover the technical secrets to imbue the eyes of your portraits with life, depth, and emotion—the point where realism becomes art. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Anatomy of Sparkle: More Than Just a White Dot In a porcelain portrait, the eyes are not just another feature; they are the gravitational center of the work. If the gaze is "alive," the viewer immediately connects with the piece, forgetting that they are looking at a ceramic object. Achieving that spark of life requires more than talent: it demands a deep understanding of how light interacts with the pupil and iris. At the Atelier, we teach that painting a gaze is, in reality, painting the light that the person reflects, using our discipline of observation to find the exact sparkle that gives the portrait its soul. The most common mistake is thinking that the sparkle in the eye is just a white dot. To achieve striking realism, we must observe the secondary reflections and transparency of the cornea. Working with oil on a terracotta surface gives us the advantage of creating layers of depth that mimic the eye's actual structure. Each layer of paint, after firing, adds a dimension of transparency that makes the gaze seem to follow the viewer around the room—an effect achieved only with patience and rigorous technical mastery. The Transparency of the Iris and the Volume of the Sclera: The iris is a universe of textures and nuances. To paint it, we use mixtures of pure mineral pigments that allow us to create soft glazes. We don't aim for a flat color, but rather a layering of tones that simulates the depth of the eye tissue. On the other hand, the sclera (the white of the eye) is never truly white; it is full of subtle shadows, grays, and skin tones that give it its spherical shape. Mastering these nuances is what distinguishes a painted eye from an eye that seems to pulsate beneath the porcelain glaze. The Role of Eyelids and Eyelashes: Expression resides not only in the eyeball but also in the frame that surrounds it. The eyelids define the weight of the gaze: weariness, joy, or nostalgia. Here, the use of extra-fine precision brushes is non-negotiable. Eyelashes must be painted with a freehand stroke so light it almost resembles a sigh, avoiding the rigidity that would shatter the illusion of realism. Every hair, every wrinkle, is a thread weaving the narrative of the face we are immortalizing. The Firing: The Moment the Gaze Awakens: As with all our work, the kiln has the final say. It is during vitrification that the colors settle and the vitreous luster of the porcelain adds to the brilliance we have painted. Sometimes, a portrait requires two or three separate firings just to perfect the depth of the eyes. This resilience in the process is what guarantees that, upon opening the kiln, we will find a gaze that speaks to us, reminding us why portraiture is the most demanding and rewarding discipline of porcelain painting. Your Path to Human Realism I invite you to lose your fear of the human figure. Painting a portrait is a journey of personal discovery where you learn to look at the other with an unprecedented level of detail and love. My commitment in the workshop is to give you the technical tools and the confidence so that you can capture the essence of your loved ones. Come and discover how a little pigment, a fine brush, and the right technique can make a person's soul shine forever on a porcelain plaque. FAQs about the Soul in a Portrait Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: Why is it so difficult to make eyes look realistic? The difficulty lies in capturing transparency and reflected light, elements that require expert handling of shadows and highlights. In realism, we don't paint an "eye," we paint the way light bounces off it. If the highlight isn't correctly placed or if the eyelid shadows are too harsh, the eye will lose its spherical volume and look flat or artificial. What colors are used for skin shadows in a portrait? For skin shadows, we never use black; we use mixtures of earth tones, purples, greens, and subtle blues that create a "living" shadow. Skin color is a layering of undertones, and in porcelain, we take advantage of the transparency of the pigments so that light passes through the layers of paint, mimicking the warmth and depth of real human skin after firing. How many times does a complex portrait have to go into the kiln? A high-quality portrait usually requires at least three to five firings. The first stage is for the base and basic shadows; The following layers are for deepening the color, adjusting the details of the eyes and hair, and the final layers for softening glazes or applying precious metals if the work requires it. This layering process is what gives the three-dimensional depth characteristic of realism. Can a mistake in a portrait be corrected after firing? Yes, porcelain painting allows for adjustments in successive firings, although it is easier to darken or saturate than to lighten. If a feature is misplaced, it can be corrected with covering techniques in the next layer, but initial planning and disciplined observation are fundamental to minimizing structural errors, which are more difficult to reverse once vitrified. Question 11

The Porcelain Stand

Accepted Answer

The Porcelain Support Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title The quality that defines the work is born before the first stroke of gold touches the surface. We must choose the canvas: a porcelain whose purity and glaze guarantee that your talent not only shines but remains eternal. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Importance of Porcelain as a Canvas In the art of the third firing, the porcelain piece is not just a decorative object; it is the foundation upon which our entire technique rests. Not all porcelains are the same, and learning to distinguish a high-quality support is the first step toward mastery. The interaction between the glaze of the piece and our pure mineral pigments will determine whether the color blends elegantly or remains opaque on the surface. At the Atelier, we choose each support with the same rigor with which we select our brushes, understanding that the nobility of the material is what allows art to transcend time. Choosing a suitable support is a strategic decision. Low-quality porcelain may have porosity or impurities invisible to the naked eye, but which the kiln's fire will relentlessly reveal. To achieve the fluidity required by our oils and vehicles, we need a perfectly vitrified and smooth surface. The porcelain must be our ally, allowing the brush to glide effortlessly, facilitating the flow we seek in each freehand painting session. Whiteness and Translucency: The Standard of Excellence. When applying the discipline of technical observation, the first things we look for are absolute whiteness and translucency. Fine porcelain, when held up to the light, should allow a soft and uniform light to pass through. This purity of the material is what guarantees that the colors will not be altered after firing. If the support has a grayish or yellowish tone, it will reduce the luminosity of the work, especially affecting portraits and realist pieces where light is the true protagonist of the painting. The Glaze: The Stage Where the Magic Happens. The secret of a great piece lies in its glaze. This vitreous layer is what receives our paint and protects it forever. A high-quality glaze has superior hardness and a balanced surface tension that prevents the oil from "opening" uncontrollably. It is on this stage that the mastery of realism comes to life; if the glaze is defective, the paint can flake off or bubble. That is why, in the workshop, we only work with pieces whose industrial manufacturing process guarantees perfect vitrification at high temperatures. Fire Resistance and Multiple Firings. A work by an artist is rarely finished in a single session; it often requires three, four, or more firings to achieve the desired depth. This is where the quality of the support is put to the ultimate test. Mediocre porcelain can suffer from thermal fatigue, developing cracks or "hair" after several firings. In contrast, a piece of structural excellence withstands temperature fluctuations with grace, allowing us to work layer upon layer of oil paint on the surface until we achieve the vitrified resilience that characterizes our collection. An Investment in the Perpetuity of the Artwork Choosing the best porcelain available is an act of respect toward ourselves as artists and toward those who value our work. You cannot build something eternal on a fragile foundation. By selecting supports from renowned brands or prestigious origins (such as Limoges porcelain or certain elite European factories), we are ensuring that every hour invested in the detail of a gaze or the filigree of a gold brushstroke is a sound investment. The quality of the support is what transforms a simple ceramic into a cultural heritage that will shine intact for centuries. FAQs about Porcelain Supports Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: What is the difference between common ceramics and porcelain for painting? Porcelain is a fine-paste, white, and translucent ceramic that is fired at much higher temperatures than ordinary ceramics, giving it almost zero hardness and porosity. This superior vitrification allows the pigments from the third firing to fuse perfectly with the glaze, achieving a professional and durable finish that conventional, more porous and opaque ceramics cannot offer. Can you paint on porcelain that already has industrial decorations? Yes, you can paint on industrially decorated pieces, but you should keep in mind that the original colors may react with the new pigments during firing. At Marina Fiamingo's Atelier, we prefer to work on "virgin white" to have complete control over the color palette and prevent the previous design from interfering with the aesthetics of realism or the purity of precious metals. How can I tell if a porcelain piece is suitable for firing at 800°C? The best way to check is to ensure the piece is marked as "porcelain" and not "stoneware" or earthenware, and that it has no cracks or previous repairs. A simple home test for quality is sound: when gently tapped with a metal object, high-quality porcelain should produce a high-pitched, sustained ring, similar to a bell, indicating a dense, uncracked internal structure. Why do some porcelain pieces "chip" or explode in the kiln? This usually occurs due to internal air bubbles, trapped moisture in the support, or uneven thermal expansion between the body of the piece and the glaze. Using high-quality supports minimizes these risks, as their industrial manufacturing ensures uniform density. However, it is always vital to follow a slow heating and cooling curve so the piece can "breathe" and adapt to the heat without stress. Porcelain is a fine-paste, white, translucent ceramic that fires at much higher temperatures than common ceramics, giving it almost zero hardness and porosity. This superior vitrification allows the pigments from the third firing to blend seamlessly with the glaze, achieving a professional and durable finish that conventional, more porous and opaque ceramics cannot offer. Yes, it is possible to paint over industrially decorated pieces, but it's important to keep in mind that the original colors may react with the new pigments during firing. At Marina Fiamingo's Atelier, we prefer to work on "virgin white" to have complete control over the color palette and prevent the previous design from interfering with the aesthetic of realism or the purity of the precious metals. A simple home test for quality is sound: when gently tapped with a metal object, high-quality porcelain should produce a high-pitched, sustained sound, similar to a bell, indicating a dense, seamless internal structure. This is often due to the presence of internal air bubbles, trapped moisture in the support, or uneven thermal expansion between the body of the piece and the glaze. Using high-quality supports minimizes these risks, as their industrial manufacturing ensures uniform density. However, it is always vital to follow a slow heating and cooling curve so that the piece can breathe and adapt to the heat without stress. Ask me directly. Discover my exclusive tableware collection. Question 12

Gold and Precious Metals

Accepted Answer

Gold and Precious Metals Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Can we elevate porcelain to jewelry? Let's explore the ultimate distinction that transforms a work of art into a timeless collector's item, where the brilliance of metal embraces the purity of porcelain. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Noble Brilliance of Precious Metals The use of precious metals in porcelain painting is the finishing touch that elevates a creation from the everyday to the extraordinary. Applying gold, platinum, or silver is not just a decorative element; it is a statement of value and durability. As with pure mineral pigments, the metal must be of the highest quality so that, after firing, it reveals its full splendor. At the Atelier, we understand that every stroke of gold is an investment in beauty, transforming ceramics into a vitrified jewel that will last for generations. Working with precious metals requires a jeweler's mindset. Liquid gold, for example, is a suspension of real gold particles in resinous oils that, before firing, appears as a dark brown, dense liquid. It is only through heat that the vehicle evaporates and the metal fuses with the glaze, revealing that intense, luxurious yellow luster. This transformation is one of the most magical moments in the creative process, demonstrating that the patience we cultivate has a brilliant and tangible reward. Applying Liquid Gold and Luster: Precision is paramount when applying metals. Due to their high cost and chemical behavior, there is no room for error. We use precision brushes exclusively for gold, ensuring there is no contamination from other pigments. Whether you are aiming for a subtle border or an intricate freehand design, the brush load must be exact. Liquid gold glides onto the porcelain with a unique fluidity, demanding a steady hand and a clear vision of the final composition before the metal touches the plate. Platinum and White Metals: Contemporary Elegance For those seeking a more modern or minimalist aesthetic, platinum and silver are exceptional choices. These white metals offer a mirror-like silvery luster that stands out beautifully against white porcelain or dark backgrounds. In the workshop, we explore how these metals can complement realist techniques, such as black and white oil on mole, adding metallic highlights that capture the eye. The versatility of precious metals allows us to play with light in ways that pigment alone cannot achieve. The Trial by Fire: Firing the Metals The firing of precious metals generally occurs at a lower temperature than base pigments, around 700°C to 780°C. This process is critical: too low a temperature will prevent the metal from adhering properly, and too high a temperature can "burn" it, robbing it of its luster. This is where the discipline of technical observation becomes indispensable. Proper firing ensures that the gold is resistant to wear and tear, becoming permanently integrated into the molecular structure of the porcelain. Exclusivity and Preservation of the Artist's Work A piece decorated with gold is, by definition, an exclusive work. The intrinsic value of the material adds to the artistic value of the execution, creating a heirloom object. To preserve this luster, we recommend special care, avoiding abrasives that could wear down the metallic layer over time. Ultimately, a work that includes precious metals, like those we explore in our healing gallery, is a testament to the fact that porcelain art knows no bounds when striving for absolute excellence. FAQs about Gold and Precious Metals Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: Is the gold used to paint porcelain real gold? Yes, the gold used is 18k to 24k real gold that has been chemically processed to suspend it in a base of resinous oils. This liquid state allows it to be applied with a brush, and it is the heat of the kiln that removes the oils, leaving a pure layer of precious metal permanently adhered to the surface of the porcelain. At what temperature does gold burn into porcelain? Gold generally burns at a temperature between 720°C and 780°C, depending on the type of ceramic support. It is essential to perform this firing separately or as the final stage, as mineral pigments usually require higher temperatures. Precise control of the kiln's temperature curve is vital to ensure the gold maintains its mirror-like shine and does not become dull. Can gold pieces be put in the microwave? No, pieces decorated with gold, platinum, or silver should never be placed in a microwave. As these are real metals, they act as electrical conductors and can generate sparks that damage both the appliance and the decoration of the piece. Porcelain with precious metals is a luxury work of art that requires careful and traditional handling. How do you clean gold on porcelain so it doesn't lose its shine? The best way to clean gold is with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild soap, avoiding the use of abrasive sponges or automatic dishwashers. Over time, gold may show light fingerprints or dust, but gentle cleaning will restore its original luster. Treating the piece like a jewel ensures the metal remains pristine for decades. Question 13

Oils and Vehicles in Porcelain

Accepted Answer

Oils and Vehicles in Porcelain Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Let's explore the secret of fluidity to understand how mastering mediums and oils transforms the viscosity of the pigment, allowing you to paint with the freedom and precision your work deserves. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Role of the Vehicle in Third-Firing Painting In porcelain painting, oil is the vehicle that carries the soul of the color; without the right medium, the pigment is just inert powder. The relationship between the artist and their work is mediated by the fluidity of the brushstroke, and that fluidity depends entirely on the chosen vehicle. Whether you seek the freshness of a portrait that seems to breathe or the tactile density of a rough texture, understanding the chemistry of oils is what allows you to stop struggling with the material and start creating with it. In this article, we'll break down the liquid tools that make technical mastery possible in the studio. The medium not only "wets" the pigment, but also determines its working time and adhesion before firing. By mixing your mineral pigments with the correct oil, you create a paste that should be pliable enough for the brush but stable enough not to drip. This interaction is the foundation of everything we teach: learning to "feel" the oil's resistance is the first step to mastering the technique and ensuring that each brushstroke lands exactly where your eye intended. Open Oil: The Ally of Softness and Time. When working on portraits or large sfumato effects, "Open Oil" is our best ally. Its main characteristic is that it doesn't air dry, giving us almost unlimited working time to blend colors and create imperceptible transitions. It's the essential medium for achieving the softness of a child's skin, allowing you to go over the stroke again and again until you reach perfection. With open oil, haste disappears, and observation becomes the only rhythm that matters. Closed Oil and Copaiba: Precision and Texture For techniques requiring immediate definition or layering without the base shifting, we use "closed" or resinous oils, such as copaiba balsam. These oils dry faster and have a viscosity that allows the pigment to adhere more firmly. They are essential for the oil painting technique, where we aim to create reliefs and textures with character. Closed oil ensures that the minute detail of an eyelash or the vein of a leaf will not be lost in the next stroke. The Alchemy of Mixing: Achieving the Perfect Balance Mastery in the use of carrier oils lies in knowing how to combine essential oils (such as lavender or clove) with base oils to adjust the density to your personal preference. The "golden drop" of a good essential oil not only enhances the aroma of the studio but also modifies the surface tension of the mixture, allowing the brush to glide effortlessly. Finding your own mixing recipe is part of the artist's discipline, a process of experimentation that transforms a simple technical task into a ritual of preparation for excellence. Chemical Integrity and Firing Safety Finally, the use of high-quality oils ensures that, during firing, the vehicles evaporate cleanly without leaving residues that dull the porcelain's brilliance. An unsuitable oil can create bubbles or stains that ruin hours of dedicated work. At the Atelier, we prioritize refined vehicles that respect the purity of the pigments and the integrity of the piece. Using the optimal media is a statement of principle: it is choosing the assurance that your artistic vision will survive the fire with all the intensity and brilliance you imagined. FAQs about Oils and Vehicles Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: What is the main difference between open and closed oil? The fundamental difference lies in drying time and viscosity: open oil paint doesn't air dry, allowing colors to blend indefinitely, while sealed oil paint dries faster and offers greater fixation. Open oil paint is ideal for realism and portraits, while sealed oil paint is preferred for defined lines, pen and ink, or relief techniques where the paint needs to "stay." Can I mix open and sealed oil paints in the same piece? Yes, they can be used in the same piece, but generally at different stages or for specific purposes, always ensuring they are chemically compatible. Many artists use a sealed oil base for background details and reserve open oil for softer areas. The key is understanding how each behaves to prevent one from displacing the other before firing. What are lavender or clove oil used for in painting? These essential oils are used as natural thinners and retarders that improve the fluidity and aroma of the paint mixture. Lavender oil helps the pigment flow more smoothly, and clove oil can further slow drying in certain mediums. These are the "secret touch" for adjusting the consistency of the paste according to the weather or the artist's preferred texture in each session. How does the weather influence the behavior of oils in the studio? Heat and humidity can slightly alter the viscosity of oils; heat usually makes them more fluid, and cold makes them thicker. A skilled artist observes these changes and adjusts their mixture by adding an extra drop of medium or thinner as needed. Maintaining a stable studio temperature helps materials behave predictably, facilitating technical mastery. Question 14

Brushes for Realism in Porcelain

Accepted Answer

Brushes for Realism in Porcelain Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title When we have precision tools, we don't paint objects, we caress volumes; discover why choosing the right brush is the 50% of success in realism on porcelain. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link Synthetic vs. Natural Hair Brushes in Porcelain In the art of porcelain, the brush is not simply a tool, but a direct extension of the artist's intention. To achieve the level of detail and smoothness that realism demands, choosing the right brush is as critical as the quality of the mineral pigments we use. A low-quality brush can frustrate even the most talented stroke, while a precision tool responds to the most subtle touch, allowing for imperceptible transitions and minute details. In this article, I will guide you to understand what to look for in your bristle allies so that your talent flows freely on the white plate. One of the first technical decisions is choosing between synthetic bristles or natural hair. For working with heavy oils and techniques like oil painting in mole, high-quality synthetic fibers (such as Toray or golden taklon) are generally superior. These brushes hold their shape and "memory" much better to the viscosity of the material, allowing for precise loading and unloading of pigment. When observing works that require complex textures like fur, you'll see that a synthetic with a good point is essential for achieving complete control over each filament. Shapes and Sizes: The Basic Kit for Realism You don't need dozens of brushes to get started in realism, but you do need the right ones. An optimal basic kit should include: extra-fine point round brushes (sizes 000 to 2) for details and contour lines; small flat or filbert brushes for filling in areas and blending edges; and perhaps a soft mop brush for blending very delicate transitions. The key is for each brush to maintain its original shape, allowing the patience we cultivate in the brushstroke to translate into a flawless finish on the raw surface. The Importance of the Point and Snap: In freehand realism, the point is everything. When choosing a round brush, make sure that, when wet, the bristles come together into a single, sharp point, with no loose hairs. Also, look for brushes with good snap; this means that the bristles should be flexible but return to their original position immediately after the brushstroke. This technical control is vital for achieving precise anatomical details, such as those we explore in portraiture, where a millimeter of deviation in the gaze changes the expression of the work. The Care and Longevity of Your Tools: Discipline in the studio doesn't end with the firing of the piece; it extends to the care of your materials. To guarantee the longevity of your brushes, never let the paint dry on the bristles, especially if you are using fast-drying mediums. Wash them with mild soap and warm water after each session, shape the tips with your fingers, and let them dry horizontally. This maintenance habit is part of the discipline of observation and technical rigor that allows us to trust our tools for each new creation. Investing in Your Own Technical Mastery Choosing high-quality brushes is, ultimately, an investment in your own growth as an artist. A good brush allows you to focus on composition and volume, instead of struggling with an unresponsive tool. In our space, we select each tool under the premise that only the best is suitable for creating the eternal. I invite you to explore our selection and discover how the right brush transforms the painting experience, turning each session into an act of fluidity, precision, and technical enjoyment. FAQs about Brushes for Realism Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: What is the best type of hair for painting realism with oils on porcelain? For realism with heavy oils (such as oil on mole), high-quality synthetic fibers are generally superior to natural hair. They hold their point and shape better in the face of the material's viscosity, offering greater control for fine details and precise strokes, although for very soft blending (such as in children's portraits), very soft natural squirrel or goat hair mop brushes can be used. Do you need to buy very expensive brushes to start? You don't need a huge number, but it is vital to invest in two or three essential, high-quality brushes from the beginning. A fine round brush (size 0 or 2) and a small flat brush from a good brand will give you better results and last longer than a cheap, low-quality kit, allowing you to enjoy the learning process without the technical frustrations that come with poor tools. How do I know when it's time to replace a brush? It's time to replace a brush when it loses its ability to hold its original point, when the bristles splay, or when they become uneven. A worn-out brush prevents you from achieving the precision required for freehand realism, so it's best to set it aside and perhaps use it for less delicate tasks like mixing pigments or applying bases. Can you use the same brushes for pigments and for polished gold? Absolutely not; you must have a dedicated and perfectly clean set of brushes just for applying gold and precious metals. Residues of mineral pigments or oils from conventional paint contaminate gold, dulling its shine and altering its color after firing. Maintaining this separation is a fundamental technical rule that we teach to guarantee jewelry-quality finishes on your pieces. Question 15

Mineral Pigments

Accepted Answer

Mineral Pigments Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Let's explore the secret of durability and color by understanding how the choice of high-purity pigments defines the intensity, brilliance, and permanence of your artwork over the years. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Chemical Composition of Color Painting on porcelain means working with elements that must withstand the test of fire and time. Unlike other paints, the pigments we use in the Atelier are high-quality powdered minerals that, when subjected to high temperatures, fuse with the glaze of the piece. The choice of these pigments is not a minor detail; it is the foundation of excellence. A pure pigment not only guarantees vibrant colors and smooth transitions in techniques such as oil on mole, but also ensures that the artwork retains its essence after each firing. Porcelain pigments are metallic oxides that react with heat to reveal their true hue. When observing a pigment before firing, we often see a dull color that only comes to life inside the kiln. Therefore, the discipline of technical observation is vital: we must know the origin and composition of each powder. Working with top-of-the-line materials allows the artist to have total control over saturation, avoiding unpleasant surprises and guaranteeing a professional palette. Purity vs. Additives in Paint In high-end paint, the purity of the mineral is what makes the difference between a decorative piece and a work of art. Many commercial pigments contain fillers that dull the final result or make freehand application difficult. In our workshop, we prioritize pigments with extra-fine grinding that allows for a homogeneous mixture with the oils. This fineness facilitates the creation of imperceptible glazes and minute details, allowing the brush to glide without encountering lumps or resistance. The Interaction of Pigment with Fire The vitrification process is where the quality of the material is put to the test. A good mineral pigment must have a melting point compatible with the porcelain glaze to prevent it from "burning" or losing intensity. In the pursuit of mastery in realism, understanding how each color reacts to 780°C or 800°C is fundamental. Reds and purples, for example, are the most sensitive; only the highest quality pigments retain their elegance and depth after being subjected to extreme heat. Mixing and Preparation: The Role of Oils. Powdered pigment is only half the story; the other half is the vehicle that carries it. How we mix these minerals with specific oils determines the workability of the paint. Whether you seek the texture of mole oil or the transparency of open oil, the quality of the pigment ensures that the mixture is stable and does not change over time. An optimal material is one that responds to the artist's hand, allowing for extended working times before firing. An Investment in the Perpetuity of the Artwork. Choosing quality materials is, ultimately, an act of respect for one's own work and for the collector. A work created with selected mineral pigments will not fade in sunlight or deteriorate with use. At the end of the process, what we seek is for the captured beauty to be eternal. I invite you to learn more about these materials in our space, where each tool is chosen so that your talent shines with the intensity and durability that only true artisan porcelain can offer. FAQs about Mineral Pigments Find here the answers to the most common questions I receive about this product. Ask me directly: What exactly are mineral pigments for porcelain? Porcelain pigments are compounds of finely ground metal oxides and fluxes that vitrify when fired. Unlike synthetic pigments used in other art forms, these are designed to withstand temperatures up to 850°C, chemically fusing with the porcelain glaze to achieve a permanent and unalterable finish. Can pigments from different brands be mixed? Yes, they can be mixed, as long as their firing temperature ranges are compatible to avoid unwanted chemical reactions. However, at Marina Fiamingo's Atelier, we recommend using consistent, high-purity pigments to ensure that the texture and color intensity remain uniform across the entire surface of the artwork, especially in realist pieces. Why do some colors change so much after firing? The color change is due to the chemical reaction of the metallic oxides with the heat and the components of the glaze. Colors like gold (which appears brown before firing) or certain blues require prior technical observation. Understanding this behavior is part of the technical mastery we teach so that the final result matches the original artistic vision. How does pigment quality influence the cost of a piece? Pigment quality directly impacts the cost due to the rarity of the minerals (such as cobalt or gold) and the refined grinding process. Using optimal materials guarantees saturation, requiring fewer layers of paint and fewer firings, resulting in a final piece of greater artistic value, superior brilliance, and guaranteed durability for centuries. Question 16

Painting the Soul in Porcelain

Accepted Answer

Painting the Soul on Porcelain Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Sometimes, the brush doesn't just apply color, but becomes the silent tool that allows us to forgive, accept, and embrace our own story on the porcelain. Art can become an act of healing. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link Porcelain as a Mirror of the Soul I have discovered that porcelain, with its pure white surface, acts as a mirror of our inner world. When we sit in front of it with the intention of creating, we not only capture images, but we also project our emotions. Healing through porcelain art begins with accepting that vulnerability. By observing how the pigments melt, we can allow ourselves to melt our tensions as well, understanding that each piece can be a container for our own story of overcoming adversity. The Healing Embrace of Oil on Mole One of my most personal works, which explores precisely healing through the hands, taught me that the oil on mole technique has an almost therapeutic quality. The density of the material and the need to work it gently and patiently force us to slow down. In this process of blurring light and shadow, we also soften the sharp edges of our memories, transforming the act of painting into a comforting embrace for ourselves and those we love. Resilience Vitrified by Fire: The passage through the kiln is the perfect metaphor for human resilience. As we saw when discussing the force of nature, the material withstands extreme temperatures to achieve its maximum beauty and hardness. Observing this process inspires us to see our own "trials by fire" not as punishments, but as processes of strengthening. By painting, we vitrify our ability to move forward, creating pieces that are tangible testimonies to our own capacity to endure and shine. Patience in the Studio as Active Meditation: Cultivating patience as a philosophy of life in the studio gives us a space for active meditation. By concentrating on the tip of the brush, we silence the noise of the mind and daily worries. This healing pause allows us to reconnect with the present moment, valuing each stroke and each burn as part of a path of self-discovery. Art teaches us that beautiful and lasting things require time, and so do we. The Invitation to Paint Your Own Story I invite you to see porcelain painting not just as a hobby, but as an opportunity to dialogue with your soul. In my studio, I seek to create a space where technique is the bridge to sincere expression. It doesn't matter if you seek to perfect the realism of a portrait or simply play with colors; the act of creating with intention is, in itself, an act of love and healing. Allow yourself to paint your story, burn by burn, embrace by embrace. FAQs about Painting the Soul Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: How can art help in processes of grief or forgiveness? Art helps process grief and forgiveness by offering a nonverbal channel for expressing complex emotions that are often difficult to put into words. On porcelain, painting a portrait or a symbolic object allows one to externalize pain or memories, transforming them into a beautiful image that can be observed, accepted, and eventually integrated as part of a story of overcoming adversity. Is prior talent necessary to use porcelain painting as therapy? No prior talent is needed, only a willingness to connect with the material and allow the creative process to unfold without judgment. In Marina Fiamingo's workshop, the focus is on the intention and well-being generated by the act of painting; the technique is learned step by step, serving as a tool to structure the mind and focus emotions on creation. What differentiates art as healing from a conventional painting class? The main difference lies in the intention: while a conventional class focuses on the aesthetic result, art as healing prioritizes the artist's emotional process. Introspective observation, acceptance of imperfection, and the symbolic use of color and form are encouraged, transforming each piece into a personal milestone of growth and well-being beyond its final beauty. How does the durability of vitreous china influence the concept of healing? Durability plays a role by symbolizing the permanence of overcoming adversity and the personal transformation achieved during the process. Once vitrified by fire, the artwork becomes almost unalterable, serving as an eternal reminder of the artist's inner strength and their ability to transform initial fragility into a resilient and lasting beauty, mirroring their own process of resilience. Question 17

Training the Eye to Create

Accepted Answer

Training the Eye to Create Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Inspiration isn't a bolt of lightning from the sky; it's the result of a trained eye that finds wonder in the smallest details of daily life. Let's delve into the discipline of observation. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Clinical Eye of the Porcelain Artist I'm often asked how I manage to capture the depth of a gaze or the freshness of a petal, and the answer is always the same: discipline. Daily observation is a muscle that must be exercised consistently, looking beyond the obvious forms to discover the undertones of color and the micro-shadows. In my workshop, I encourage my students to observe the world as if it were a blank porcelain slab, analyzing how light bounces off objects and how color changes depending on the time of day. Nourishing the Internal Visual Library Every object, face, or landscape that we observe attentively is recorded in our memory as a resource for future works. This "visual library" is what allows us, for example, to decide which type of open or closed oil will work best to represent a specific texture. By disciplining our gaze, we stop depending on luck and begin to make technical decisions based on a reality we have thoroughly studied, turning inspiration into a predictable and powerful working tool. From Mental Sketch to Stroke on the Plate: The discipline of daily observation means that, when we finally sit down to paint, much of the work is already done in our minds. I have noticed that the most accomplished works, such as those that explore black and white realism, are born from hours of silent contemplation. Observing how the paint behaves on virgin porcelain is part of that discipline; understanding the support is as important as understanding the model, and that connection is only achieved through the constant practice of seeing with intention. Routine as a Source of Inspiration: It is not necessary to travel to exotic places to find subjects to paint; true mastery lies in finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. A cup of coffee, the reflection in a window, or the hands of a loved one, as in my healing work, are inexhaustible subjects if we look at them closely enough. The discipline of observation teaches us that beauty is everywhere, waiting for someone to pause long enough to see it and possess the necessary technique to immortalize it in fire. The Commitment to Artistic Excellence At the end of the day, disciplined observation is a commitment to excellence. It is what differentiates a decorative work from a true original piece imbued with emotional weight. Along my path, I have learned that you cannot paint what you do not know, and you cannot know what you have not observed with love and rigor. I invite you to make observation your daily habit: look at the shadows, analyze the highlights, and allow yourself to be surprised by the world; your brush will thank you with every new burn. FAQs about Training the Eye to Create Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: How does a disciplined artist differ from one who merely waits for inspiration? The disciplined artist works even when they don't feel like it, using technique and prior observation to move forward, while the one who waits for inspiration depends on random external factors. Discipline allows Marina Fiamingo to maintain a consistent, high-quality output, as her craft and trained eye compensate for moments of lower creative energy. Is it necessary to draw every day to paint porcelain well? It's not strictly necessary to draw on paper, but it is vital to "draw with your eye" every day, analyzing proportions and light in the surroundings. This mental practice develops spatial memory and color perception, skills that transfer directly to freehand painting on the porcelain plate, facilitating brushwork. What role does studying other masters play in observation? Studying other masters is fundamental to learning new ways of interpreting reality and expanding our own technical solutions. By observing how other artists have resolved light or composition, we enrich our own perspective, allowing us to evolve and find a personal style that is both technical and authentic. How does discipline help in handling oil on a canvas? Discipline helps in handling oil on a canvas by teaching us to anticipate the density and volume of the material before it touches the piece. As a medium that requires precision in brush loading, constant observation of how the material flows or settles allows us to master its nuances, avoiding common mistakes and achieving professional finishes with fewer burns. The disciplined artist works even when they don't feel like it, using technique and prior observation to move forward, while the one who waits for inspiration depends on random external factors. The Art of Waiting

Accepted Answer

The Art of Waiting Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title In a fast-paced world, the porcelain workshop offers us the luxury of pausing; understanding that fire and brush have a rhythm that cannot be rushed. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link Time as an Invisible Ingredient Painting porcelain is, above all, an exercise in surrendering to time. Unlike other disciplines, here the final result is not immediate; it requires multiple days of work and the obligatory passage through the heat of the kiln. I have learned that this waiting is not a void, but an invisible ingredient that gives the work maturity. As happens in the process of two firings of the portrait, each minute of patience translates into a depth of color that haste could never achieve. The Dialogue between the Artist and the Kiln Accepting that we do not have absolute control is one of the most humble lessons this art offers. We can observe every detail and apply the oil painting technique to the mole clay with perfection, but when we close the kiln door, the art of waiting begins. That interval of time is a metaphor for life itself: we do our best and then trust the process. This philosophy has taught me to transmute anxiety into serene expectation, valuing each stage of creation equally. The Maturation of the Creative Idea: Often, inspiration needs to rest as much as pigments on the plate. Patience in artistic composition allows us to see mistakes before they become permanent and adjust our gaze in front of the blank canvas. Looking at my black and white realism works, I recall that many of those shadows were the product of a reflective pause, of knowing when to put down the brush to let the idea finish forming in my mind before executing it. Calm in the Freehand Stroke: The precision that freehand painting demands is incompatible with urgency. When the pulse quickens with haste, the stroke loses its soul. Cultivating patience as a philosophy of life in the studio allows me to enter a state of "flow" where chronological time disappears. This calm is what allows subtle details like the sparkle in someone's eyes or the texture of a fabric to come to life, demonstrating that quality is a direct result of uninterrupted dedication. The Workshop as a Refuge from the Present Today more than ever, the act of observing and painting becomes a refuge from digital immediacy. I invite my students to see each painting session not as a race toward the finished piece, but as a moment of absolute presence. In the end, what remains is not just a decorative object, but a record of time lived with awareness. Patience with porcelain restores our ability to enjoy the process, reminding us that the most beautiful things in life always require their firing time. FAQs about the Art of Waiting Find here the answers to the frequently asked questions I receive about this post. Ask me directly: How long does it take to finish a complex porcelain piece? A complex piece can take anywhere from several days to weeks, depending on the number of firings and the level of detail required. In Marina Fiamingo's realism, time isn't measured in hours, but rather in achieving the desired atmosphere, respecting the drying times of the oils and the kiln's cooling cycles. Why is porcelain painting considered a therapeutic activity? It's considered therapeutic because it forces the mind to anchor itself in the present and regulate its internal rhythm through breathing and pulse. The patience required to work with delicate materials helps reduce stress levels, transforming the studio into a space for active meditation where the focus is on creation and observation. What happens if you try to accelerate the drying or firing process? Accelerating the natural processes in porcelain often leads to technical failures such as bubbles in the paint, peeling, or breakage due to thermal shock. The discipline of waiting guarantees the physical integrity of the piece and the purity of the pigments, ensuring that the work maintains its brilliance and adherence over the years. How does patience influence the technique of oil painting on porcelain? In the technique of oil painting on mole, patience is vital for working the layers of relief without displacing the base material. Because it is a medium with more body, it requires a smooth and deliberate approach to achieve the transitions of light and shadow that define volume, something only attained when the artist allows themselves to work without the pressures of time. Question 19

The Beauty of Imperfect

Accepted Answer

The Beauty of Imperfect Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Finding art in resilience, observing the "flaws" or cracks in life, and in porcelain, you could create something unique. Sometimes, the greatest inspiration doesn't come from perfection, but from the ability to observe a crack and decide that your light will filter through it, and a new story will begin to be painted on your porcelain. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Gaze Beyond the Crack In the world of porcelain, a crack is usually the end of a piece, but for the artist's eye, it is the beginning of a narrative. Observing imperfection requires a special kind of courage: the courage to accept that what is broken has its own beauty. As in my work on the force of nature, I have learned that the scars on the material—and on our own history—are channels where light can enter more powerfully, allowing us to create from a place of absolute authenticity. The Art of Repairing with Emotional Gold. Inspiration from imperfection often reminds me of the philosophy of Kintsugi, which celebrates breakage. By applying the oil-on-the-wall technique to surfaces that have been tested by fire, we seek to highlight the piece's history. This profound observation teaches us that we shouldn't hide what has suffered, but rather integrate it into a new composition that is more resilient and complex than the original, demonstrating that true mastery lies in transformation. Nature as an Example of Adaptation. If we carefully observe a forest or a single leaf, we see that perfection doesn't exist in its pure form; adaptation and survival exist. This same "imperfection" is what I try to capture in my botanical pieces. The irregularity of a branch or the withered edge of a petal gives the work a truth that clinical realism sometimes loses. To be inspired by nature is to accept the cycle of life, with its light and shadows, and to capture it with the delicacy that only freehand painting allows. Creative Resilience: Failure as Inspiration. Not all firings in the kiln turn out as we expect, and it is in that moment of "frustration" that inspiration must be at its sharpest. Learning to observe a piece that didn't turn out perfect forces us to reinvent our technique. This creative resilience is what has allowed me to perfect the use of open oil, finding solutions where before I only saw problems. Mistakes become teachers, and observing mistakes becomes our best tool for artistic growth. An Invitation to a New Perspective. I invite you, the next time you face a difficulty, to try observing it with "porcelain eyes." Look for the line, the color, or the texture that the situation is offering you. My artistic process has taught me that inspiration is not a gift for a select few, but a reward for those who dare to look at imperfection with love and curiosity. Healing through art is, ultimately, learning to find beauty in every part of our journey, however bumpy it may seem. FAQs about the Beauty of Imperfect Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions I receive about this publication. Ask me directly: How can a technical flaw be integrated into a work of art? Integrating a technical flaw requires observing the anomaly as an organic element and adapting the composition so that the crack or stain becomes part of the design. In porcelain painting, this may involve the use of precious metals or reinforcing shadows with oil paint to give intention to what was originally an accident of the process. How can a technical flaw be integrated into a work of art? Resilience is the driving force that allows the artist to persevere in the face of the difficulties inherent in fire and materials. In Marina Fiamingo's workshop, we understand that each failed firing is a lesson in humility and technique that strengthens patience and sharpens the capacity for observation for future creations. Why is imperfection considered more "human" in realism? It is considered more human because it reflects the reality of life, which is full of textures, marks, and wear. A realism that ignores imperfection appears artificial; therefore, in portraits and botanical works, capturing the detail of what is worn or asymmetrical is what generates a true emotional connection with the viewer. How does observing nature help overcome creative blocks? Nature offers endless visual solutions to problems of color, form, and balance that can unlock the artist's mind. By observing how a plant grows among stones, we find a visual metaphor for resilience that can translate into new themes and technical approaches for our porcelain work. Question 20

The Secret of Inspiration in Porcelain

Accepted Answer

The Secret of Inspiration in Porcelain Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title To achieve the level of detail required for porcelain painting, the first brush we must train is our eye. Clinical observation of reality allows us to understand how volumes are affected by the environment, a vital skill when working with techniques such as black and white oil on mole. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link Observation as the Foundation of Realism To achieve the level of detail required for porcelain painting, the first brush we must train is our eye. Clinical observation of reality allows us to understand how volumes are affected by the environment, a vital skill when working with techniques such as black and white oil on mole. Without meticulous observation, realism remains on the surface; with it, we capture the essence of what we are representing, whether it be the smoothness of skin or the hardness of a rock. Finding Beauty in Imperfection: Inspiration often hides in the most unexpected places, frequently in what others would consider a mistake or an accident. As we saw in my work on resilience and the strength of nature, a fracture in porcelain can be the starting point for a narrative of overcoming adversity. Observing imperfection with an artist's eye allows us to transform what is broken into beauty, understanding that each crack is an opportunity for something new and stronger to emerge, always guided by a clear intention. Patience in Artistic Composition: Learning to observe also means learning to wait. In the studio, composition doesn't arise immediately; it requires us to sit before the blank canvas and let the idea mature. This patience is the same I apply when working on mastering portraiture, where each feature must be observed from multiple angles before the brush touches the plate. Patient observation is what ensures that the final composition has balance, harmony, and, above all, a truth to communicate. The Emotional Impact of an Attentive Gaze Ultimately, the art of observation has a profoundly healing and human component. When we observe with our hearts, as happened when I painted the hands in my mother's embrace, the act of painting becomes a bridge to understanding. Observation allows us to forgive, accept, and celebrate the stories that surround us. At the end of the day, the porcelain is merely the support; the true work of art is the new way we learn to see the world and those who inhabit it. The Mastery of Detail Against a Dark Background The use of the absolute black background was not a random aesthetic choice, but a narrative necessity to highlight the light emanating from the act of weaving. In oil on mole, the dark background acts as a void that pushes the details toward the viewer, making the "perfect imperfection" of human hands take on a sacred prominence. By painting each strand of wool emerging from the darkness, I sought to symbolize how the recognition of love can illuminate even the coldest corners of our memory. FAQs about Inspiration in Porcelain. Find here the answers to the most common questions I receive about this work. Ask me directly: What is the difference between looking and observing in art? Looking is an automatic physiological act, while observing is a conscious process of analysis and emotional connection with the object. In porcelain painting, observing involves breaking down what we see into light, shadow, and texture, allowing the brain to translate reality into technical brushstrokes before applying color. How can I train my observation skills at home? The best way to train observation is to dedicate ten minutes a day to studying an everyday object under different light sources. Observe how the reflections change on a piece of fruit or how shadows are cast on a canvas; this simple exercise develops the "trained eye" necessary to master complex techniques such as freehand realism. What should I do when I feel I lack inspiration? When inspiration is slow to flow, the ideal is to return to the basic sources of observation: nature and the works of other masters. Don't try to create something perfect immediately; Simply observe and make quick sketches. Often, the act of observing without the pressure to produce is what unlocks creativity and allows new ideas to emerge naturally. Why is observation vital for the oil on porcelain technique? Observation is vital for oil on porcelain because this technique demands precise planning of tonal values from the outset. As a material with body and texture, the artist must have observed and fully understood where the maximum light in the work resides, since the technique does not allow for as many subsequent corrections as other, more fluid media. Question 21

Oil in Mole - Healing

Accepted Answer

Healing Through Oil on Mole Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title In the intimacy of the studio, I have discovered that art has the power to translate the deepest silences into eternal images. "My Mother's Embrace" is not only a technical exercise in realism, but the discovery of a secret language: understanding that a mother's love, even when it lacks words or physical embraces, manifests itself with unwavering strength in daily care, in constant presence, and in the unhurried rhythm of a weaving that never ends. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Symbolism of Hands in Oil on Mole This work is my tribute to that silent affection, transforming routine into an act of ultimate healing on porcelain. The piece celebrates the unwavering love woven into the simplicity of the everyday. Using the oil on mole technique on the deep black background allowed me to highlight the texture of the wool and the wisdom of hands marked by time. As in my work on resilience in porcelain, here hands become the stage for a story of overcoming adversity; learning to see affection with the eyes of the heart through artistic observation. Hyperrealism as a Tool for Connection: Painting hands, along with childhood portraits, is one of the most complex challenges for any artist. In this work, oil paint on a thick surface was my ally in differentiating the smoothness of the fabric from the skin. Every crease of the hands and every strand of wool was worked freehand, aiming for the viewer to almost feel the softness of the thread and the firmness of the movement. It is an exercise in hyperrealism that requires the same precision I learned in my training with Mónica Conde, but applied to a purely emotional narrative. The Transformation of Pain into Acceptance: Upon completing the painting process, I understood that this work was my own act of personal healing. My mother's constancy, her silent presence, and her daily care manifested in the porcelain as a tangible embrace that I hadn't previously recognized. As we explored in my first analysis of the black and white oil on canvas, the contrast between light and shadow not only defines volume but also the intensity of feelings. This piece is proof that art has the power to reinterpret our past and embrace our history. The Mastery of Detail Against a Dark Background: The use of the absolute black background was not a random aesthetic choice but a narrative necessity to highlight the light emanating from the act of weaving. The Legacy of Craft and Gratitude: "My Mother's Embrace" invites us to look beyond the obvious and honor the crafts we inherit from our roots. Porcelain painting has given me the opportunity to immortalize gestures that would otherwise be lost to time, transforming the ephemeral into something vitrified and eternal. Today, this work is a reminder that love isn't always spoken; sometimes it's woven, cooked, or painted, and the greatest gratitude lies in learning to recognize those invisible languages that have sustained us throughout our lives. FAQs about "My Mother's Embrace": Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions I receive about this work. Ask me directly: What does the oil on mole technique represent in this portrait of hands? The oil on mole technique is the perfect tool for capturing the tactile realism of skin and fabric on porcelain. Thanks to its density and blending capacity, it allows for working on minute details such as the wrinkles of the hands and the twist of the wool, giving the work an emotional depth that only the mastery of this technique can achieve. An expert in light and shadow can achieve this. Why was a black background chosen for this porcelain piece? A black background was chosen to maximize dramatic contrast and focus all attention on the sacred act of weaving. By eliminating any ambient distractions, the viewer is forced to confront the narrative of the hands, allowing the light emerging from the oil on porcelain to symbolize the clarity and healing found through the artistic process. How is the texture of wool achieved in porcelain painting? The texture of wool is achieved through careful layering of glazes and the use of precision brushes that mimic the path of the yarn. In oil on porcelain, this requires extreme patience to apply pinpoint highlights to the raised areas, creating the optical illusion of volume and softness that characterizes textile fibers. What is the importance of freehand painting in emotional works? Freehand painting is fundamental because it allows the artist's vibration and feeling to be transferred directly to the porcelain without intermediaries. In works like "My Mother's Embrace," the freedom of the hand stroke This is what allows the artist to capture the essence of the gesture and the "perfect imperfection" of human hands, something impossible to replicate with tracings or stencils. Question 22

The Softness of Open Oil in Porcelain

Accepted Answer

The Softness of Open Oil Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Creating through the art of patience in porcelain, I have come to understand that capturing a child's gaze requires a very particular technical sensitivity. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link Childhood Portrait: The Softness of Open Oil on Porcelain In this portrait, created on a porcelain slab in 2015, the challenge was not only the anatomical proportions, but also achieving that ethereal and soft atmosphere that surrounds childhood. Through the child's crystalline gaze, I sought to capture curiosity and purity, allowing the porcelain to cease being a rigid support and become a breath of light and color. The Open Oil Technique on Faces Unlike other works where the precision of oil paint in a solid mass is key, in this intensive seminar with Professor Mónica Conde, we opted for the use of open oil. This technical variation is fascinating because it gives the artist extended working time, allowing the colors to be blended with extreme delicacy before firing. As we mentioned in my article on portrait mastery, the choice of vehicle (oil) determines the final texture of the skin on the porcelain. A Two-Firing Process: Layers of Emotion. Achieving this depth in just two firings was an exercise in synthesis and confidence in the brushstroke. During the first intensive session, we focused on the tonal map and the main volumes; on the second, we dedicated ourselves to the details that bring it to life, such as the sparkle in the eyes and the softness of the hair that seems to peek out from behind a veil. This piece taught me that painting on porcelain is a constant dialogue between the intention of the brush and the response of the fire, where each firing consolidates a layer of the story we want to tell. The Influence of Mentorship on Realism. Once again, the guidance of a master like Mónica Conde was the catalyst for reaching this level of realism. In art, surrounding oneself with role models who have mastered the open oil technique is what allows for leaps in quality in the handling of soft shadows. This portrait is the testament to two days of total immersion, where the goal was to capture not just an image, but the feeling of a presence. It is a reminder that, in freehand painting, the artist's soul is transferred to the piece through shared observation and technique. The Gaze as Narrative Center In this portrait, the composition plays with what is seen and what is intuited. The brushstrokes that frame the child's face, worked with the fluidity that open oil paint allows, create an organic frame that directs all attention to those blue eyes full of questions. For me, this work represents the search for perfection in subtlety, demonstrating that in hand-painted porcelain, sometimes what is suggested is as powerful as what is precisely defined. FAQs about Open Oil Portraits Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions I receive about the Open Oil Technique. Ask me directly: What is open oil in porcelain painting? Open oil is a vehicle that keeps pigments fresh and workable for much longer than closed oil. Its use is ideal for portraits and pieces requiring very delicate blending and smooth color transitions, as it allows the artist to go over the painting and correct gradients before firing. How is it possible to paint a realistic portrait in just two firings? Painting a portrait in two firings requires rigorous technical planning and a mastery of tonal value from the very first brushstroke. In the first firing, the base shadows and main structures are established, while in the second, the high-definition details and final color adjustments that bring the expression to life are applied. What is the difference between open oil and closed oil? The main difference lies in the drying time and viscosity of the material. While closed oil tends to set faster, allowing for almost immediate precision work, open oil offers prolonged workability, making it preferred for achieving smooth skin in children's portraits or atmospheric backgrounds. Why is a porcelain plate used for portraits? The porcelain plate offers a flat and stable surface that facilitates composition and the visualization of anatomical proportions. Unlike curved objects, the slab allows the artist to work with the same logic as a traditional canvas, but taking advantage of the unique luminosity and durability that only vitreous enamel can offer. Question 23

The Mastery of Oil Painting in Mole

Accepted Answer

The Mastery of Oil Painting on Mole Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Creating through the art of patience on porcelain, I have discovered that portraiture is, perhaps, the most profound challenge for an artist: it is the art of seeing beyond the surface to capture the soul. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Mastery of Oil Painting on Mole and the Power of Observation This "Portrait of a Woman" is not just a technical piece, but the result of an intensive study process where observation became my main tool. In the studio, every glance and every shadow reminded me that, to paint life on porcelain, we must first learn to honor the details that make us human, transforming pigment into pure emotion. The Privilege of Continuing Education This work was born in a very special context: an intensive seminar with Professor Mónica Conde, an artist whom I deeply admire. Studying under her guidance allowed me to delve deeper into the oil painting technique on mole, taking my observational skills to a new level of rigor. As we explored in my analysis of the black and white oil on mole, realism isn't about copying an image, but about interpreting light, and under Mónica's guidance, that interpretation became much sharper and more precise. The Portrait Technique: A Challenge of Precision Painting a face freehand on porcelain requires almost meditative discipline. The use of open-faced oil in this piece was key to achieving the smooth skin transitions and the depth of the gaze. Unlike in higher-contrast works such as The Force of Nature, here the challenge was subtlety. The goal was for the softness of the brushstroke to allow the viewer to feel the warmth of the face, as if the porcelain had ceased to be a cold material and become skin. The Power of Observation in Open-Faced Oil Painting Portraiture forces us to confront our own patience. During the seminar, we dedicated hours to understanding how light travels across the contours of the face before the brush even touched the piece. Thanks to the inherent qualities of oil on mole clay, I was able to work on and refine each feature, ensuring the anatomy was perfect before the first firing. This technique allows for unique creative freedom, enabling me to "sculpt" with the brush until the woman's expression on the porcelain was just right. The Importance of Mentoring in Art: Admiring other artists and learning from their methods is what keeps the flame of creativity alive. My time in Mónica Conde's studio reinforced my belief that porcelain art is a path of endless learning. By sharing this work with you, I am not only sharing a finished piece, but also a piece of my own growth as a mentor and artist. Oil on mole clay is the language I have chosen for this journey, and each portrait is a new opportunity to perfect the dialect of beauty and technique. FAQs about Oil on Mole Clay Portraits: Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions I receive about the Oil on Mole Clay Technique and its use in portrait works. Ask me directly: Why is porcelain portraiture considered a difficult technique? Porcelain portraiture is a complex technique because it demands absolute anatomical precision and total control of light. When working with oil on porcelain, the artist must be able to anticipate how the shadows and features will set after firing, since the human face is the structure that most readily reveals any errors in proportion. How does oil on porcelain help achieve realism in faces? Oil on porcelain helps achieve realism because it allows for much longer mixing times than other techniques. This facilitates the creation of imperceptible gradations and soft glazes, which are essential for replicating skin texture and the softness of features without leaving obvious brushstrokes. Is it necessary to know how to draw freehand to paint portraits? Knowing how to draw freehand is a fundamental basis for achieving the mastery I strive for in my work. In oil painting on porcelain, direct observation and the ability to map the face onto the porcelain without stencils are what distinguish a handcrafted piece from a work of art with soul and technical depth. What role does an intensive seminar play in an artist's training? An intensive seminar allows the artist to step outside their comfort zone and subject their technique to the scrutiny of an expert mentor. In my experience, studying with artists like Mónica Conde accelerates mastery of oil painting on porcelain, forcing us to refine our clinical eye and discover new ways to resolve challenges of volume and color. Question 24

Oil on Mole and Resilience on Porcelain

Accepted Answer

Oil on Mole and Resilience in Porcelain Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Creating through the art of patience in porcelain, I have learned that cracks are not the end of a piece, but the beginning of a much deeper story. Sometimes, the kiln's fire imposes its own will and delivers a fractured work; at that moment, my task as an artist is to decide whether to see a defeat or an opportunity. "The Force of Nature" was born precisely from that break, transforming a technical accident into a metaphor for our own capacity to heal, be reborn, and flourish with greater strength right in the places where we were broken. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Metamorphosis of Error into Beauty This work, originally created in 2015, transcends the traditional concept of decoration to become a stage for resilience. The porcelain plate, fractured by the intensity of the heat, ceased to be a smooth surface and transformed into the path from which the Vine emerges. By applying the drying oil technique, using V220 and clove (with closed oil), I was able to work the texture of the grapes and leaves with a delicacy that contrasts sharply with the hardness of the fracture. A Process of Acceptance and Overcoming: The vine that seems to "break" the plate as it grows represents the unstoppable will to live. It is that organic force that doesn't ask for permission, but rather forces its way through adversity. In the workshop, this reminded me that the greatest beauty lies not in absolute perfection, but in the acceptance and overcoming of our own imperfections. Mixed Media: Drying Oil and Gold Details: To elevate the narrative of this piece, I decided that the technique should be as complex as the message I wanted to convey. I used drying oil to achieve the volume of the fruit, allowing each grape to have those intense colors and the characteristic sheen of painting done with these drying oils. However, the final touch of authority was given by the gold details. Gold on porcelain is not just an ornament; it is the material that honors the scar. By illuminating the edges of the Vine and the details of the leaves, I managed to capture the light within the work, symbolizing the abundance that emerges after the storm. It is a piece that invites touch, inviting you to feel the difference between the coldness of the broken porcelain and the warmth of the freehand-painted relief. As in my black and white works, where the management of light is fundamental (as you can see in my analysis of Oil on Mole in Black and White), here the contrast serves to highlight the life that emerges from the fracture. The Support as an Extension of the Work: "The Force of Nature" does not end at the edge of the plate. To complete the metaphor, I designed a wooden support, also painted with oils. In this space, the Vine continues its journey, constructed with painted paper tape and gold leaf. This expansion of the work beyond the traditional support reinforces the idea that life cannot be contained. The oil paint on the plate and the gold leaf on the outer structure create a visual dialogue where humble and noble materials merge to celebrate survival. It is, in essence, an ode to artistic and personal resilience. The Legacy of Imperfection. Looking at this work today, years after its creation, reaffirms my philosophy as a guide and artist. In a world that demands we be perfect and productive, porcelain teaches us the fragility and strength of patience. Every time I apply a glaze of color to a surface that has been fired, I am reminding myself that what breaks can be restored with something much more valuable: purpose. FAQs about Drying Oil. Find here the answers to the most common questions I receive about the Drying Oil Technique and the use of gold for details. Ask me directly: What happens if a piece of porcelain breaks in the kiln? Although the initial instinct is to discard it, in my art studio, we see the break as a new canvas. Through the combination of mixed media techniques and the application of gold, the fracture is integrated into the narrative of the work, increasing its emotional and artistic value by making it a unique piece. How is gold applied in porcelain painting? Gold is applied in the final stage, generally after the paint layers have been fixed in previous firings. It is a precious material that requires a specific firing process to vitrify and fuse with the porcelain glaze, providing an eternal brilliance that does not fade over time. What is the difference between oil on mole and oil on wood? Oil on mole for porcelain uses special oils that do not air dry and mineral pigments that only reveal their final color after firing at 780°C. Oil on wood, like that used on the support of this work, is a traditional oxidative drying technique that allows for different textures but does not require firing. What is the meaning of the Vine in this porcelain piece? The Vine is a universal symbol of abundance, life, and transformation. In this piece, I represent the metamorphosis of resilience: the ability to use life's cracks as channels for something new, nourishing, and beautiful to emerge, demonstrating that we can flourish in adversity. Oil on Mole, Black and White Style

Monochromatic Mole Oil Portrait Recommended Reading Home / Blog / Parent Category / Category / Page Title Creating through the art of patience in porcelain, I have learned that fire not only hardens the material, but also crystallizes emotions. Imagine being able to stop time and capture the light right in the groove of a caress or in the wise gaze of a grandmother; that is what oil on mole is for me. In this article, I open the doors of my studio to show you how, starting from the purest and most absolute white, I use patience and chiaroscuro as my only brushes to bring to life portraits that not only decorate spaces, but also safeguard legacies and awaken the soul. Table of Contents Share this article Facebook WhatsApp X Copy link The Challenge of Monochrome and Emotion I decided to create this work exclusively in monochrome to eliminate any distractions and focus purely on tonal value. By working without the aid of color, all the strength of the piece lies in the psychology of light. Oil on porcelain allows me absolute clarity in the transitions, clearly differentiating the child's smooth skin from the grandmother's skin marked by time. In this piece, the contrast is what tells the story: the deep black makes the light on the faces emerge with dramatic force. My Four-Fire Process: Patience as a Guide. In my studio, time is measured in fires. I follow a four-firing process to build volume with total control of the composition, where patience defines the final result: First Fire: Rescuing the Highlights. I focus on rescuing the main highlights, using the pure white of the porcelain as my highest starting point. I establish the anatomy with subtle shadows, creating a soft and balanced map of the face. Second to Fourth Fires: Progressive Enhancement. My work focuses on gradually building up the color. Oil on porcelain allows me to apply successive glazes to intensify the depths without losing the initial luminosity. Thus, the baby's skin remains ethereal while the old woman's gains a vivid and deep texture. In pieces where hands and details take center stage, oil on thick porcelain is fundamental for separating planes of depth. Freehand painting is a challenge of anatomical precision; every wrinkle and every ridge of a strand of wool must have its exact place. This technique allows me to achieve absolute black in the background, a darkness that pushes the subject forward, making the details of the nails and tanned skin almost tactile. The light seems to be trapped between the skin of the grandmother and the baby. In this final stage of the process, the color intensifies, layer by layer, until it reaches a dramatic point where the light seems to be caught between the fingers and the needles. The use of chiaroscuro with this intensity makes the work "jump" off the porcelain. For me, the ultimate goal is for the viewer to forget the hardness of the porcelain and feel the softness of a baby's skin and the wisdom accumulated through life experiences, encased in every wrinkle of Grandma. All united by the vitrification process in the kiln. More than a hobby, a haven of beauty. For the woman seeking a space for expression, oil on porcelain offers something few other mediums achieve: permanence. What we seek to create is not ephemeral; it is a work that survives time, thanks to the vitrification process in the kiln. If you feel that the pace of the modern world is too fast, art using the oil on porcelain technique is an invitation to slow down. It is learning to see the light where others only see emptiness, and understanding that, like porcelain, our best selves are forged slowly and carefully. FAQs about Oil on Porcelain. Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions I receive about the Oil on Porcelain Technique. Ask me directly: What exactly is the oil on porcelain technique? It's my primary working method, where I use the same pigments as in other techniques, only in this case, I mix them with oils that keep them fresh until firing. This allows me to work calmly and achieve neat, more precise blending before putting the piece in the kiln. Why is oil on mole ideal for realistic portraits? Because it allows for an infinitely smooth transition of shadows. Unlike other fast-drying techniques, oil on mole gives me the necessary time to "sculpt" anatomical features and skin textures with a precision that seems to come alive on the porcelain. How many times does the piece need to be fired? It depends on the desired effect. Each firing sets a layer of intensity. In the case of this piece, I performed four firings, which were vital to achieving the deep blacks and intense shadows without saturating or compromising the natural transparency of the porcelain. Can anyone learn to paint with oil on mole? Absolutely. Although it requires guidance and patience, it's an extremely rewarding technique. My approach is to teach you to "see" the light first; once you understand how oil on mole behaves on the surface, the process becomes a unique artistic meditation.
